Students Interact

One of the benefits with our partnership with the YMCA is the use of the facilities for programs during the day.  Throughout the school year our students participate in a program called Students Interact.  Students Interact gives all students the tools to enjoy life and foster future confidence in and concern for others. Active learning strategies such as role-playing moods and feelings, making use of active listening and “I” messages, assertively practicing refusal skills and conflict-resolution techniques, and demonstrating acceptance and tolerance of others are ways in which learning benchmarks enable students to apply social learning to new situations.
Thank you to Mrs. Connolly and her helping teachers for working on this great program.

Future 8th Graders

This week begins the process for current 7th graders to register for 8th grade.
Tonight at 7:00 in the cafeteria I will be presenting the same information that your son or daughter will see in their classes.
The form for registering is here.

Below is a copy of the presentation they will see.

Bullying Stops Here

Bullying has been a hot and important topic today in schools and at home.
Here is a link to the recent law passed by the state regarding bullying.
We have had many interventions at BJHS.  They have included bringing speakers in to talk to students, incorporating curriculum from the Michigan Health Model, adding curriculum to computer classes regarding cyber bullying, and individual and group counseling.
I have also added the following link, Bullying Stops Here, to the junior high’s homepage in order for students/parents to report situations to the JHS Administration.
Yesterday Mr. Whan took several administrators to Lansing to go over the new law and how we need to implement it at Bedford Public Schools.
As always, please communicate with your child’s school when you have any incident.  Our goal is to help your child.

Quiz Bowl

One of my favorite traditions at BJHS is Quiz Bowl.  We will be starting our annual Quiz Bowl competition during homerooms next week.  We have grade level competitions during homeroom. Which culminates with a in-school tournament in April. We award a huge trophy to the teams that win and the trophy is proudly displayed in that classroom until the following year’s competition. Then grade level all star teams are selected to represent the school at the Monroe County ISD competition in April.
Thank you to our PTSA for sponsoring and running the event.
Good luck to all participants.

Happy New Year!

Welcome back for the remainder of the 11/12 school year and Happy New Year!

A lot of things are going on at school, so continue to monitor the daily announcements. They can be found on the JHS Home Page.

The scheduling process has begun for the 12/13 school year. We have already met with the current 6th graders and information can be found here.

We do have an informational meeting for parents of current 7th graders on 1/17 in the cafe at 7:00.  I will post information to the blog after we have had the  meeting.

The SHS meeting for current 8th graders has been rescheduled to 2/8/12.  SHS scheduling questions can be directed towards the SHS.
